The Significance of Information-brief and First Data 1/2 day workshop

The new project we got after the first day we went back to uni of Christmas holiday and this field project is about information design. In the morning, we have had an hour lecture introducing about what is information design and look at some examples to have a concept of how we should develop the visual system of showing the information. After we got the brief, we start our first data workshop and before we start, we have told to answer all the question individually.  When all the students answered all question next, we were putting into a different group with one of the questions also, those answers of that question became our data. Those are the questions:

  • 1. If you had to be stuck in a lift with somebody, who would that be?
  • 2. What is your favourite book/publication?
  • 3. If you had to listen to one song on repeat, what would it be?
  • 4. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
  • 5. What is your Guilty Pleasure?
  • 6. Who inspires you?

And I was put in group 6 with the question who inspires you, once everyone has sat down, we first separated all the answers in groups then named the categories. Then we have to start thinking how we want to show and visualise the data, the first idea we got is to use a body figure to show the amount.

the information and data we got for the question and this is the draft after we put them into groups

This is the figure that we made, we divided it into five to six parts and each section represents a certain amount. However, we did not do it at the end because we were told that we focused the things wrong, our idea is focusing on the people so we made the figure but we seem forgot what the question is. Who inspires you? we point out who gave us the inspiration however, we did not show what inspiration we got and that is the thing we should show. Therefore, we changed the idea into something related to the inspiration.

The digital form I made in my spare time although we did not use the idea finally, it still can be a record of the project, also I added some element of it.

This is the pattern represent ‘inspiration’, and I use this pattern to create the figure on the above, it is something that very difficult to explain and for me ‘inspiration’ is very colourful, it is everywhere and it is an explosion.

The second idea we got is quite pretty and colourful, we think some special shape represented the word ‘inspire’ and we think of something like flowers(represented the number of people), cloud(represented our ideas, inspiration) and trees(represented the process of when our knowledge and ideas are growing.)

This visual system we divided it into six sections as well and the smallest amount start from the bottom so as you see number six is the biggest. Inside each part, we drew a different amount of vines, flowers, people and other tiny drawings and that amount is represented by each number of the data. However, after it’s done we found out there is one mistake, the size of number 2 is bigger than 3 and that’s our carelessness we did not make the measurement right when we were doing the draft but at the same time that’s the only problem we got, so we still feel pleased.

There is an extra idea we got at the below but we did not use it because we felt it’s quite common therefore we chose to use the one above.
